An Introduction to Local History St. Andrews Street lies at the hub of modern Norwich. Its history and evolution is covered in many historical documents and city maps. From its days as Wymer Street to its current status as a city thoroughfare, St. Andrews Street has been a central part of the city's history. We know that a library once stood there, as did a prison and a property of the Dukes' of Norfolk. Howard House is now home to BT, but what occupied the site in the past? Why was St. Andrews originally called Wymer Street? And how did the boom and bust periods of city trading affect its residents? This project is done out of local interest and is not meant to be an exhaustive history nor an academic work. It has been compiled from books, articles and local records, all of which have been acknowledged on the Articles & Resources section of this web site.
