Russell James Crouch

Tasmania

Russell James Crouch was born on 26h November, 1904 to unknown parents. Adopted into the Crouch family, as a young man he worked as a labourer at Mossman near Port Douglas, Queensland, Australia. He was too young to have served during the First World War like his brothers but he did go on to serve in the Second World War. He enlisted in Sydney and named his sister Ruby as next-of-kin.

From 18th September, 1942 through to 10th June, 1954 he served in New Guinea. Following this he served in Moratai from 4th April, 1945 to 4th January, 1946.

On 20th September, 1948, Ruby's (now Ruby Hodson) son, Ray, wrote to Army District Records Offices requesting Russell's address because Russell's R.A.S. badge had been sent to Ruby, "my mother's brother whom she has not seen for nearly 30 years." The address could not be released and the badge was returned to the District Records Office.

In 1975 the DSS Toowoomba wrote to the Records Office requesting confirmation of Russell's date of birth but no further record was located. Like family members before him, no one heard from Russell again.
