Britton

Tasmania

Catherine Elizabeth Britton was the daughter of George Bradley and Rose Maguire. As mentioned previously, George had changed his name to Joseph Britton sometime after arriving in Tasmania. How Catherine was brought up in the face of her parents misdemeanors we do not know. She would seem to have married someone named Hughes although to date no marriage record has been found of such a union. Catherine Hughes (nee Britton) married John Baird at Fitzroy, Victoria on September 30, 1886. As mentioned previously, John Baird and Catherine do not appear to have had children of their own but they did go on to raise a family of adopted children over subsequent years. Her hudband’s life will be recounted shortly, in the meantime the only other information we have on Catherine is her death in 1914, shortly after three of her sons had gone to war.

The newspaper notices of Catherine's death were reported as follows:-

CROUCH - On 25th June 1914, at her late residence, Baker's Creek, Ranelagh, Catherine, beloved wife of John Crouch; aged 58 years. Funeral will leave her late residence at 1 pm on Sunday, arriving at the Congregational Cemetery at 3 pm. Friends are respectfully invited to attend. Perry and Stanley, Undertakers.
